Creative Arts Discovery and Practice

Your playful and artistic urges can lead you to a rich, authentic, and more connected way of living. This six-week class will provide a generous opportunity to truly drop down into the river of creativity running just below the surface of your daily life. It can quench your spirit and answer your soul’s longing.

Using an array of art materials and playful practices, students will be gently guided in step-by-step processes designed to build comfort in expressing their own visual and kinetic language. Emphasis is on exploration and experimentation rather than product, and the non-judgmental practices of listening and allowing. In addition to visual media, we use breath, movement, sound, writing, meditation, and poetry to shift into the quiet space from which art simply flows.

Evening classes:
  • Six Thursdays, May 25 - June 29; 6:30 - 9:30 pm, led by Susie Garland
  • Six Thursdays, July 20 - August 24; 6:30 - 9:30 pm, led by Susie Garland

    Thirsty Thursday Discovery & Practice

(While Kelly's away the mice will play!)

    Quench your artmaking thirst!

In this offering for previous students of CADP (Creative Arts Discovery & Practice), participants can continue art & play immersion in community with a peer-guided open studio on some summer Thursdays. Longtime CADP student Naoma Donnelly will unlock the door and hold a safe space for warm-up centering practices, approximately two and a half hours of individual worktime, and a closing check-in. Join for one or more sessions, or all - your choice. A chance to dip in or gather regularly to feed your creative energy, momentum, connection, and joy!

Participants should bring a snack or sack lunch, water bottle, and notebook or journal.

Please note: Although a fun, playful, joyous and meaningful time in community, this is not a social time. Individual work alongside fellow explorers is priority. You do not have to commit to every session; you may sign up for those that work in your summer schedule - but do let us know you're coming by registering ahead of time.

    Long Circle

    facilitated by Susie Garland

If you’re going to be an artist, all life is your subject. All your experience is part of your art. A youngster told me recently that he was going to give himself a year to see if he has talent. A year! It takes a lifetime to see what you have. Art is total engagement.
    ~ Ben Shahn

In our abundant and busy lives, it is challenging to find opportunities to deeply explore our creative impulses. Long Circle is your opportunity! It is LONG in that we have the luxury of time to dive deep into Art & Soul’s practices of play, authentic movement, sounding, and intuitive art making. These practices allow us to slip out of our everyday mind and drop down into a more centered listening space out of which creation flows. It is a CIRCLE because we create in community. We share the weekend with fellow explorers in an atmosphere of safety and non-judgment. We are all creative beings, each with our own medium and unique voice. We are writers, dancers, story tellers, painters, crafters, players, and much more. Join the circle. You will be glad you did!

We recommend that students first take the Creative Arts Discovery & Practice class before signing up for Long Circle, but if you feel you are ready, please contact us.

Monthly Drawing Class with Guest Artist Michael Damico

Guest artist Michael Damico joins Art & Soul for a special series of once-a-month Saturday afternoon drawing classes open to all skill levels. Come on your own or bring a friend for an early evening out in 12th South!

Students will warm up for class through contour drawing methods such as blind, two-hand, and non-dominant hand drawing techniques and then learn how to apply those methods, and the artistic understanding they develop, through still life drawing activities. You’ll learn what parts of a still life to draw first, and how to use string measurements to discover ratio for accurate drawing.

Students will be encouraged to keep a journal to track progress, which will aide Michael in providing 1:1 feedback to help you build a drawing language, enhance your strengths, and remove limitations. Michael has the unique ability to see through your lens in order to help you sort through confusion and discover what you are trying to find or create in your artwork. While the class is most beneficial in a cumulative form, newly curious artists at all stages are welcome to jump in at any time.

Participants are asked to bring the following supplies:
~ Charcoal pencils: soft, medium, hard (5 of each)
~ Prismacolor Magic Rub Eraser (specifically this brand)
~ Large newsprint pad (18” x 24” at least, but larger is better)

    Polyester Plate Lithography & Marbling

a weekend workshop with guest artist Lesley Patterson-Marx

Join teaching artist Lesley Patterson-Marx for a fun weekend combining two types of printmaking! Students will create beautiful, abstract compositions through the aqueous printmaking medium better known as “paper marbling.” We’ll be working experimentally with marbled “stone” patterns on 8x10 and 11x14 sheets of paper. In the Sunday session, students will learn the process of polyester plate lithography, and will integrate these prints into their marbled compositions. The polyester plate lithographs, printed on Art & Soul’s own press, will allow for incorporating imagery from photographs, collage, and drawings into your marbled designs.

This course is perfect both for people with little or no printmaking experience and for seasoned printmakers who want to loosen up and work experimentally, or for those familiar with the techniques who might want a fun refresher course.

All processes are non-toxic. Supplies provided. Class size limited to six, so register early.
