Creative Arts Discovery and Practice

Your playful and artistic urges can lead you to a rich, authentic, and more connected way of living. This six-week class will provide a generous opportunity to truly drop down into the river of creativity running just below the surface of your daily life. It can quench your spirit and answer your soul’s longing.

Using an array of art materials and playful practices, students will be gently guided in step-by-step processes designed to build comfort in expressing their own visual and kinetic language. Emphasis is on exploration and experimentation rather than product, and the non-judgmental practices of listening and allowing. In addition to visual media, we use breath, movement, sound, writing, meditation, and poetry to shift into the quiet space from which art simply flows.

Evening classes:
  • Six Thursdays, May 25 - June 29; 6:30 - 9:30 pm, led by Susie Garland
  • Six Thursdays, July 20 - August 24; 6:30 - 9:30 pm, led by Susie Garland
  • Fee

    Thirsty Thursday Discovery & Practice

(While Kelly's away the mice will play!)

    Quench your artmaking thirst!

In this offering for previous students of CADP (Creative Arts Discovery & Practice), participants can continue art & play immersion in community with a peer-guided open studio on some summer Thursdays. Longtime CADP student Naoma Donnelly will unlock the door and hold a safe space for warm-up centering practices, approximately two and a half hours of individual worktime, and a closing check-in. Join for one or more sessions, or all - your choice. A chance to dip in or gather regularly to feed your creative energy, momentum, connection, and joy!

Participants should bring a snack or sack lunch, water bottle, and notebook or journal.

Please note: Although a fun, playful, joyous and meaningful time in community, this is not a social time. Individual work alongside fellow explorers is priority. Saturday Night Special: Play Your HeArt Out!

    led by Anne Putnam

Looking for a Saturday night alternative to going to the movies, or out to a show or club? Want a unique date night or friends’ night out that provides a meaningful and fun experience? Or looking for some me-time and a new adventure?

    Come play with us!

Join seasoned Art & Soul-er Anne Putnam for an introduction to Art & Soul Studio and one of its primary creative practices: Play. Research shows that purposeful play contributes to a balanced, healthy, and creative life. Kids often do it instinctively but adults can benefit greatly, too!

Play is a sincere, though not necessarily serious, practice that lets us drop down into our natural selves to connect with our authentic desires and impulses. When we play, we:
  • Open up to the possible
  • Explore & experiment
  • Let go of conditioning & listen with awareness
  • Reconnect with the Source and the Sacred
  • In this two hour playdate we’ll mix it up with all kinds of non-art materials to help trick the conditioned mind to slip outside its habitual box. We’ll arrange, wrap, stack, sort, hang, tie, bend, build, and more! If we listen, play will take us somewhere we have never been.

Curious about Stuart Brown’s research in play? Listen to his TED Talk.

    Date & Time
    Saturday, July 1, 22, 29, 8 - 10 pm

    Fee
$20 (Members $15) each session; space limited to 12 adult participants (teens 16 & older are welcome as well); registration preferred but drop-ins will be welcome if space allows.

She has participated in the year-long immersion class with our founder, Arunima Orr, and is a seasoned participant in the Creative Arts Discovery and Practice course. Anne serves on the Art & Soul Board of Directors and applies the "playing" approach to all her creative endeavors with paper crafts, writing, and painting. Monthly Drawing Class with Guest Artist Michael Damico

Guest artist Michael Damico joins Art & Soul for a special series of once-a-month Saturday afternoon drawing classes open to all skill levels. Come on your own or bring a friend for an early evening out in 12th South!

Students will warm up for class through contour drawing methods such as blind, two-hand, and non-dominant hand drawing techniques and then learn how to apply those methods, and the artistic understanding they develop, through still life drawing activities. You’ll learn what parts of a still life to draw first, and how to use string measurements to discover ratio for accurate drawing.

Students will be encouraged to keep a journal to track progress, which will aide Michael in providing 1:1 feedback to help you build a drawing language, enhance your strengths, and remove limitations. Michael has the unique ability to see through your lens in order to help you sort through confusion and discover what you are trying to find or create in your artwork. While the class is most beneficial in a cumulative form, newly curious artists at all stages are welcome to jump in at any time.

Participants are asked to bring the following supplies:
~ Charcoal pencils: soft, medium, hard (5 of each)
~ Prismacolor Magic Rub Eraser (specifically this brand)
~ Large newsprint pad (18” x 24” at least, but larger is better)
~ Utility knife (box-cutter style with trapezoidal razor blade)
    ~ Optional: compressed charcoal squares
