Artistic Explorations with Ancient Geometry (no math needed!)
taught by Noa Benamotz
"... the starting point of ancient geometric thought is not a network
of intellectual definitions or abstractions, but instead a meditation upon
a metaphysical unity, followed by an attempt to symbolize it visually."
~ Robert Lawlor,
Sacred Geometry, Philosophy and Practice
Discover ancient visual practices from Greece, Egypt, India, China, Japan, Africa, and more. Explore the beauty and mystery of symmetry, simplicity, precision, and surprise through demonstration and hands-on play. Whether the experiences lead you to mystical or mathematical amazement, you will come away with techniques and “truths” often kept secret from all but the privileged few. And yet, anyone can do this; no math needed.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
taught by Deanie French
Drawing is a language as important as reading, but most people never learn it because of the bias in our society toward left-brain learning and processing. Drawing is our right-brain language, the balance to our left-brain verbal skills. Drawing is just as complex and sophisticated. It simply utilizes the gifts of the other side of our brain.
In this class, we will practice many right-brain exercises, based on the work of Betty Edwards, that will "shift" us into the right brain, which is the visual, spatial, concrete, relational, holistic part of the brain. By the end of four weeks, not only will you be amazed at your drawings, but you will also experience a sense of joy, empowerment and confidence that comes with meeting a challenge and acquiring new skills.
For beginning and intermediate students. No drawing experience necessary. More advanced activities will be provided for those interested who have taken the class previously.

Deep Dreams: Tending the Border of Possibility
taught by Moon Bishop and Amanda Cantrell Roche
What purpose do deep dreams serve? How do you accept the limitations of the possible without abandoning the hope, inspiration, passion, and possibilities inherent in a dream not birthed? We all have dreams that are so unreachable that we tuck them away - perhaps we no longer even recognize their existence. But what happens if we step over the border between our deep dreams and our ordinary lives?
Through movement, writing and visual play we will acknowledge our deep dreams, honor their power in our lives, and reflect upon the borders in which we contain them.

Play Your HeART Out
facilitated by Pat Halper
It's been said that the foundation of a successful artist AND human being is the ability to play, explore, and experiment. As adults, we tend to move from task to task with few opportunities to get lost in play - our minds are often racing ahead or trying to rearrange the past. How does it feel, and what happens, when you relax and let go? Do you doodle, enjoy digging in the dirt, create stories, or simply observe the beauty of a gorgeous day? During this workshop we'll experience the possibilities revealed when we allow ourselves time to poke around our creative universe. With rocks, beans, fabrics, wood, and an abundance of other materials and space at our fingertips, we’ll have the opportunity to become artfully lost in three-dimensional play and see where curiosity takes us.

Total Engagement: The Long Circle Artist Group
taught by Arunima Orr
If you’re going to be an artist, all life is your subject. All your
experience is part of your art. A youngster told me recently that he was
going to give himself a year to see if he has talent. A year! It takes a
lifetime to see what you have. Art is total engagement.
~ Ben Shahn
The Long Circle Artist Group (LCAG) is an advanced group that exists to serve those who have demonstrated a commitment to their art life, and who wish to develop the practices, techniques, inner connections, vision, artistry and hardiness that will lead to creating works of art over time. Our artists are writers, musicians and storytellers, photographers and multimedia performers as well as visual artists in all visual arts media—drawing, painting, collage, clay and three-dimensional play and installation.
The LCAG meets on three-day weekends. In order to be a member of the LCAG, you must attend two of the four weekends scheduled in a session. You may attend all weekends, space permitting.
Prerequisite: Creative Arts Practice or Year-Long and approval of instructor.

Dive Into the Zone: Five-Day Arts Retreat
taught by Arunima Orr
This Five-Day Visual Arts Retreat will allow you the luxury of an extended time in the studio to follow your creative flow and plunge into the depths of your process. Each day will be nourishing balance of group interaction and personal artistic exploration. Painting, drawing, writing, movement, sound, story, play, collage, breath, and silence are all ways that we will use to enter the Creative Zone. Having the opportunity to move from one medium to another stimulates images from multiple sources and allows ideas to connect as creative energies shape them into complex forms. The possibilities are limitless: embark on a substantial project, grow a complex installation, make a series of paintings, think through a piece of writing, create a multi-media performance piece. Having plenty of "deep time" to listen, play and develop those creative impulses into works allows for satisfaction in the fullness of your process, as well as your artwork. The energy of the group, as well as conversations with Arunima, will support your process.
Time & Date
August 1 - 5, 10 am - 6 pm
Fee
Full Five Days: $530 ($450 Co-op)
Four Days: $455 ($385 Co-op)
Three Days: $365 ($310 Co-op)
